Recently, I received a Shampoo Buddy to try out with my girls, ages 3 and 4, during our Hair Wash Days. A Shampoo Buddy is a portable wash basin that can easily attach to any kitchen sink or tub. The Shampoo Buddy website describes this product as ā€œsalon washing at home.ā€  It is an American-made product, created by Mom Tiffany Platt, that is designed for all ages. You can purchase the Shampoo Buddy for $39.50 on Amazon.com. My girls and I were super excited to try out the Shampoo Buddy as part of Hair Wash Day at our kitchen sink. Typically we use the pool noodle hack for Hair Wash Days. Although the pool noodle has been quite comfy for the girls, it never prevents water from getting into their eyes or dripping down their necks and backs. I was quite hopeful that a product like the Shampoo Buddy, which boasts of a salon-at-home experience, would be a winner in keeping the girls dry and fuss-free.

The Unboxing

The packaging was very simple and to the point. The product box contained the Shampoo Buddy basin, wrapped in a plastic packaging bag and an instruction manual. This box was mailed to me in a shipping box.

The Product

The Shampoo Buddy I received was blue in color. It is also available for purchase in the color grey. It has a removable soft, rubber neck pad and two suction cups with small tabs. Pretty straightforward, huh?

The Setup

Getting the Shampoo Bubby setup was surprisingly easy. The basin adheres to the edge of your sink or tub by positioning the two suction cups and locking them with a quick press of a latch.

So, in all honesty, when I first took the Shampoo Buddy out of its box, it looked like it was so easy to install that I did not look at the manual. That lead to me setting it up incorrectly. I realized this once I had my 4-year-old daughter lie down in the Shampoo Buddy and saw that her head was way too high. After referring to the instructions, I realized that I set up the basin for tub use and not sink use. It was a quick fix! I basically had to release the basin from the sink, turn it around, and secure it again.

In Use

I must say, using the Shampoo Buddy really was like having a salon experience at home. It was easy to control the water and none went neither into my girlsā€™ eyes nor down their necks onto their backs. So much better than the pool noodle hack in this case! There was no need for continuous stopping to wipe up water from my girls back or to stop it from dripping off the counter and onto the floor.

Breaking It Down

Removing the Shampoo Buddy from my kitchen sink and counters honestly was difficult for me during the first hair wash day with my 4-year-old daughter. It was slightly easier on wash day two with my 3-year-old since I knew what to expect, but I still had some difficulties. First, you have to lift up the latch on each suction cup, which was super simple. However, on each suction cup is a little tab that you must gently pull out. Then you work your fingers in between to loosen the suctioning between the cups and the sink countertop. I had some difficulty getting a good grip on the tabs while loosening the suctioning at the same time, but eventually, I figured it out. No scratches or marks were left on my countertop from where the suction cups were. Thatā€™s a plus!

Storage

The Shampoo Buddy is super compact and can be easily stored under the kitchen or bathroom sink or anywhere else desired. Itā€™s perfect for travel as well! After removing it, I dried it well, put it back in the box it came in, and stored it under the kitchen sink since wash days for us are always in the kitchen.

The Verdict

Thoughts from my 4-year-old: ā€œMy neck hurts.ā€

Thoughts from my 3-year-old: ā€œItā€™s comfy.ā€ And then, ā€œMy neck hurts.ā€

Here are my final thoughts. Overall, I think the Shampoo Buddy is a great alternative to other methods for hair wash day for your kids. Itā€™s easy to use once you get the hang of gripping and loosening the suctioning during the breakdown. Also, I noticed that absolutely no water got on my girls at all! Again, we typically use a pool noodle at the kitchen sink and there is a 100% guarantee that water will run down the girlsā€™ necks onto their backs. Not with the Shampoo Buddy! Only their heads got wet. Both girls did complain that their necks hurt while getting their hair washed. This could be because they are so used to the much softer pool noodle. Maybe the rubber of the neck pad was bothersome also? Or maybe they just wanted Hair Wash Day to be over, specifically in the case of my 4-year-old? Iā€™m not totally sure what the case was with their experience. We will definitely keep The Shampoo Buddy as part of our hair wash day routine for a while longer to see if the girls become more comfortable while in it.

I definitely recommend trying this product out for yourself! There are so many pros to adding the Shampoo Buddy to your regular wash routine. Give it a shot and let me know what you think of it!
